Overhead Lighting + Options for our Living Room

My friends and family know that I have a major problem with overhead lighting. I admit, I can be a little dramatic about it: shielding my eyes whenever someone flips the switch for the overhead light, turning off the light as I walk into a room, wearing my sunglasses indoors (just kidding, but I may try that one). I don’t know what it is but I feel like overhead lighting is unflattering and at times, kind of stressful. Maybe it reminds me of my corporate days working in cubicles lit by, what seems like hundreds of, florescent lights.

I’d much rather have the cozy glow of lamps lighting my house, but I understand the need for overhead lighting at times…like when my husband is looking for something and pulls out a flashlight because he can’t see anything in the dimmed lighting I prefer. πŸ™‚

I’ll embrace the idea of overhead lighting if it means I get to decorate something, even if it’s just the ceiling. And I’m chomping at the bit to get rid of this guy.

Ew. Just ew. Almost every room in our house has an ancient fan like this and I’m about to start ripping them out one by one. The problem with this particular room is that this fan does not have a switch to operate it. It has a pull chain to turn it on and off. So what do we replace it with? We have enough lighting in the room (in my opinion, I’m sure my husband would say different) Do we just cover the electrical components up? Put up a light with a pull string that no one under 6 foot can reach without standing on the coffee table? (ie ME…) We’ve thought of rewiring, which is possible through the attic, but it’s a lot of work for a light that isn’t super necessary.

Whatever we end up putting there will need to be pretty simple. We have the gallery wall and bookshelves, so something intricate will be too distracting. I’m thinking of a flush mount light fixture with a pull string for now, and then if we want, we can wire it to a switch down the road.

Here are a few that I like (some are a little out of our price range but good for inspiration):

Which is your favorite? Am I the only one who feels this way about overhead lighting?
