Our Living Room-Working With What We Have

I’ve been so excited to move into this house and get going on a new decorating plan for our living room. It’s the first room you see, and probably where we spend most of our time. I picked out all these great pieces I’ve had my eye on for a long time and set the “hold” button (actually the “pin” button too!) in my mind until after the wedding when I could go out and purchase said items and put it all together. After the wedding and honeymoon I got real with myself…why would I go out and buy all new things? I need to work with what we have. So scratch that idea…but just for fun, here are a few things I picked out…

I’m sure I can use pieces of it (like that mirror is going to have to be mine) but like most people, it’s unrealistic to start from scratch (unless of course you’re a gazillionaire and have a completely empty house with no furniture).
We already have furniture, a tan sofa…

I know both have seen better days, it’s a lot of tan and they’re not the most updated, but there’s no room in the budget for new furniture and they’re super comfy! So we’re going to keep them for now. See my post about decorating with a tan sofa for inspiration if you’re in the same boat.
We have a TV and stand. Both very basic.

And we have this amazing trunk (also seen better days…actually more days than I have) that was handed down from my mom’s side of the family. A little refinishing and this puppy is as good as new.

We have beige, black, and a few different wood tones so that’s a pretty good canvas to start with.
I’m loving the look of navy and black together. I know it sounds weird. I can remember back in high school when wearing navy and black together was a super fashion no no, but for some reason it’s growing on me big time. Here are some ideas I’ve seen that I love.
It’s classic and trendy all at the same time, and it’s not too bold where you’d get sick of it in a few months. Classic and trendy is the perfect combination for this house. While I love the modern and contemporary look, our house was built in the 50’s so it just doesn’t look right to have really modern decor. Another reason why I like black and navy together is you can add any color to it to change the look a little.
What do you think of the navy and black look together in a room?
